See Through
Pencil on watercolour paper

This drawing started out as a concept sketch for a sculpture, however I soon fell into the drawing itself. Perhaps the simplicity and tactile pleasure of pencil on paper took over.
One day, however, I shall assemble together old stained-glass pieces, smooth rocks, ceramic, ostrich feathers and light and see what comes out.
The glass centre is transparent: see-through. But the title ‘see through’ refers more to honing one’s ability to see beyond the surface appearance of things and into their underlying raison d'être.
This thing might be a person – what is their life purpose here on our good green Earth?
The thing might be an action – what was behind what someone said to you? How do they really feel?
The thing might be a stunningly iridescent beetle – what is their mysterious mission on this planet?
Or the thing might be an artwork, dance, fluttering in the belly, a pulling of the heartstrings – what caused this sensation or brought this emotion into being?
Philosophy and meditation can teach us how to look deeply within, to see through the veil of illusion.
